Scenic Eski Datca

On Sunday morning we set out for Burgaz by ferry. The short sail between the Bodrum and Datça peninsulas reminds of the relative ease of travel by sea over travel by land in antiquity as well as today. By ferry, the trip takes under two hours; by car it takes well over three. After a pleasant trip, we arrive at the idyllic Doğa Pansiyon in Eski Datça, which serves as our base camp, selected for its proximity to the METU excavation house where we store our finds and eat lunch and dinner with the METU team. Eski Datça, a few kilometers inland from the site, is a peaceful town known for its quaint stone houses and cobble streets. From Eski Datça, the dolmuş runs every half hour into Datça, but the two places couldn’t be more different.
