Investigation of Target 1

The first few days of the project were spent investigating our priority one target, which was characterized by a significant magnetic signature. A 40 m square grid was set up around the target in order to conduct a systematic search, and a probing and visual investigation was planned for the area. We were fortunate in discovering a shipwreck on our first attempt, and spent two days mapping, measuring, photographing, and otherwise recording the site. It was immediately apparent that this was not the wreck we were searching for, but we decided to spend the time studying the site to get a sense of the bottom conditions and iron encrustation features in the bay. Although unconfirmed, this wreck was possibly a late-19th century wooden steam vessel fitted with iron knees, one of which was discovered on the sea floor.
